Receding Gum Line

Receding Gum LineReceding gum line occurs when roots of teeth become exposed due to loss of gum tissue. Treatment of gum recession is essential since this process can help preserve your oral health. When left untreated, root caries, extensive loss of bone, tissue degeneration, and tooth loss can occur. Depending on the severity of the receding gum line, treatments can include improving oral hygiene and non-surgical and surgical procedures.

A common risk factor for developing gum recession is aging; however, individuals may notice gingival recession at a much earlier age. Tooth sensitivity is a common sign of gum recession. In addition, gum recession allows exposure of tooth’s roots, causing it to appear elongated.

In order to prevent the onset of gum recession, patients are advised to maintain proper oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoridated toothpaste is recommended. Flossing daily is also essential in order to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Visiting our periodontist for a routine examination and professional cleaning is also helpful in the prevention of gingival recession. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment will help avoid invasive dental treatments. This will also help patients retain their gum tissue, bone density and their teeth.
